Fertility Treatment Options

Oral and injectable ovulation induction uses fertility medications, including the commonly prescribed drug clomiphene citrate or Clomid, to increase the number of eggs produced by a woman per cycle. This first-line fertility treatment may be all you need to become pregnant.

IUI, artificial insemination is an in-office procedure that transfers prepared sperm directly into the uterus. IUI increases the number of sperm arriving at the site of fertilization, and is most beneficial to couples in which the male partner has decreased sperm count or sperm motility.

IVF, in-vitro fertilization bypasses many of the causes of male and female infertility, such as blocked fallopian tubes, advanced maternal age, premature menopause, endometriosis, unexplained infertility and male infertility, including sperm disorders. IVF is considered an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). The egg(s) and sperm from a couple are fertilized outside of the body (in vitro) and then transferred several days later into the uterus.

Frozen embryo transfer can offer a couple another chance to conceive without undergoing another complete ART procedure. In a typical IVF cycle, more embryos are produced than can be transferred. Couples can choose to have the extra embryos frozen or cryopreserved. When the couple is ready to try for pregnancy again, these embryos can be thawed and transferred into the uterus without having to undergo ovarian stimulation and the surgical procedures necessary for IVF.

Donor egg IVF cycle similar to a traditional IVF cycle. The egg donor receives a treatment of fertility drugs, stimulating multiple eggs to grow and mature. Once mature, the eggs are surgically removed from the donor, fertilized with the sperm to create embryos, and then transferred into the recipient patient.

Gestational surrogacy allows a couple to have genetic children through the help of a gestational carrier. A couple’s IVF embryo is implanted into a surrogate mother (a woman who carries a pregnancy for the genetic parents) and carried to full term.
