Silicon Valley is known for offering valuable job perks, but the latest moves by Apple and Facebook could help the companies attract more female employees.
According to national reports, Apple and Facebook are adding a new perk: Free egg freezing that would let female employees delay parenting for a few years. Facebook started offering the service on Jan. 1. Apple plans to begin in January 2015, NBC News said.
In a statement, the company said, “We want to empower women at Apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families.”
The coverage by Apple and Facebook is part of a growing trend to beef up employee perks at Silicon Valley companies to recruit new hires.
Once considered experimental, egg freezing is now widely available to help preserve fertility and has been approved as a standardized treatment of care for fertility preservation in women who have delayed having children.
